Django Database Migrations the EASY way!

One feature that Ruby on Rails has built in is Database Migrations. This is immensely useful and for the Internetbuyer platform it was a must. Django doesn’t have any equivalent feature built into the framework.

Thanks to the extensibility of Django, a number of third party db migration frameworks have been built. After some Investigation, we decided to go with South for our Database Migrations. One killer feature that South has is auto migration. By changing one setting to auto freeze per migration and passing in –auto into the command to create the migration, South looks at the differences in the models and creates the migration.
The South website has plenty of documentation. However, we thought a quick start guide to automatic migrations might be helpful so here we go. Note that you can add South at any point in the development of your project, however note your first migrate will fail if the data structures already exist in your database.
1. Download South version 0.5 and install it like you install any other django application. Making sure its on your Python Path.

2. In your projects settings.py, add south to your INSTALLED_APPS tuple, and add the below setting to allow for auto-freezing which is a good approach to hassle free auto migrations.
SOUTH_AUTO_FREEZE_APP = True
3. To do your initial migration, this will store your current model run the command below substituting app_name with the application name you want migrations for and migration_name with the name of the migration.
python manage.py startmigration app_name migration_name –initial
4. After you have made some changes to your models.py you can create your first auto migration, using the following command, changing app_name and migration_name to their appropriate values.
python manage.py startmigration app_name migration_name –auto
Now you have created your first automatic migration. Its time to update your database, if you already had syncdb’ed your database before, you might have to remove the tables that exist for your application for your initial migrations to work. This would only have to happen once, because from then on you can migrate changes.
5. To migrate your changes to your database use the following command, changing app_name to its appropriate value.
python manage.py migration app_name
If all has gone well you have now migrated your model to your database. One thing to note is that with really complicated models, say Dynamic Models there are a few caveats to look into on the South website.
