Google Apps the Benefits for Business

Google are fully behind the cloud computing movement with their Google Apps for business offering. Google apps offer a number of benefits to business; the browser based applications give companies the freedom to innovate by taking advantage of the scalable nature of cloud computing.

Google apps have been designed so upgrades and improvements are pushed out regularly to users. New functionality can be pushed out weekly because the software is designed to do so to ensure all customers have the most up to date software. Don’t forget, none of the software upgrades need to be done in house.

When Google Apps launch a new feature to their web based applications users can get the upgrades just by refreshing their browser. With mobile browser applications, they are kept updated without software updates. With traditional IT, software updates can be a nightmare. They can be time and labour intensive.

Google Apps benefit from anonymous usage statistics from millions of users which help Google to learn which features will benefit business users the most and apply them to Google Apps software very quickly.

Your staff benefit from the continuous updates Google Apps implement and are not subject to learn completely new software applications when a new update comes out, which is often the case when traditional software gets an upgrade.

If you want to take advantage of the benefits of Google Apps contact Catalystic to find out how we can help you use Google Apps in your business.

Cloud Computing Services for Universities

Cloud computing services continue to increase in popularity. Google Apps offer fantastic tools to organisations for messaging and collaboration. Google Apps works well for businesses but Universities can also use the tools which include Google Mail, Docs, Sites and Chat.

Many UK universities have already signed up to the Education Edition including The University of Sheffield, Sheffield Hallam University, the University of Portsmouth and De Montfort University.

Being a student needs organisation. There are lectures to attend, coursework to do and project work in groups is a requirement on most courses. Not to forget all the societies, sporting events and socialising that needs to be done.

Google Apps gives these Universities access to email, messaging and shared calendar, enabling students to schedule lectures, communicate and collaborate with lecturers and each other to organise work and events.

By signing contracts with Universities Google are firmly establishing a connection with thousands of people who will take Google Apps with them into their professional career.

Samantha Peter, business development manager at Google Enterprise says that students can take their account with them after they graduate, they can keep access to their work and effortlessly stay in touch with tutors and friends.

The universities who have implemented Google Apps have nothing but praise for the product suite. Google has the resources and time to invest in development of email systems and other collaborative tools. Universities can save time and money through switching from traditional in-house IT solutions.

Google Apps is gaining momentum in the workplace too as an alternative to Microsoft’s enterprise software. The Guardian News and Media Group and Teh Telegraph both use the Google Apps platform.

If you would like to find out how to migrate to the cloud contact Catalystic today for further information on how your business can utilise cloud computing to save time and money.

Offline Gmail passes with flying colours!

Offline Google Mail has been one of the most awaited features to be incorporated in Google Apps. Since Offline Google Mail’s inception in Google Labs more than a year ago, it has been put through cycles of continuous improvements.

It is now officially included in Gmail. By installing Offline Gmail, you’re able to use the normal Gmail interface to read and write mail, search, and organize, even when there’s no internet connection. The Flaky Connection mode speeds up Gmail when your connection is slow or unreliable.

Get Started with Offline Gmail

If you’d like to get started with Offline Gmail on your computer now, here’s how:

  1. Click the Settings link in the top-right corner of Gmail.
  2. Click the Offline tab.
  3. Select Enable Offline Mail for this computer.
  4. Click the Save Changes button.

Customizable options for Gmail offline

Gmail offline lets you work with your email from the browser even when you don’t have an internet connection, but until now, you couldn’t specify how much old mail you wanted to cache for offline access. That has changed since new options for Gmail offline have been launched.

You can now configure how much of your old email is available when you don’t have a connection. Once you enable Offline Gmail, go to the Offline settings tab to customize which labels are synchronized, how far back messages are included, and which attachments you’ll be able to access offline in your browser.

If you want to use Gmail for your business email hosting talk to Catalystic about migrating all your emails over.

Offline Gmail has proven particularly useful for business and schools making the switch to Google Apps from traditional desktop mail clients — they’re used to being able to access their mail whether or not they’re online, and Offline Gmail brings this functionality right to the browser.

Introducing the Operating System for the Cloud #chromeos

What is Chrome OS? First, it’s all about the web. All apps are web apps. The entire experience takes place within the browser and there are no conventional desktop applications to install and manage.

Second, because all apps live in the browser, there are significant benefits to security. Each app is contained within a security sandbox making it harder for malware and viruses to infect your computer.

Most of all, Chrome OS will be about speed. Every unnecessary process will be taken out, optimizing many operations and running everything possible in parallel. This means you can go from turning on the computer to surfing the web in a few seconds. Our obsession with speed goes all the way down to the metal. We are specifying reference hardware components to create the fastest experience for Google Chrome OS.

There is still a lot of work to do and Chrome OS is a year away from launch. But as you can see from the video below, Chrome OS will be the operating system for the Cloud.

Google Apps and Data Portability

Data Liberation Front

Data Liberation Front

A common question that arises when pitching Google Apps to businesses is about data portability. Businesses are rightly concerned with vendor lock in are wary of switching essential services such as Email Hosting or Document storage to a provider that does not provide a mechanism to get their data out of the service.

Earlier this morning, Google’s announced their Data Liberation liberation initiative, which stems from their core belief that it ought to be easy for users to move their data into or away from Google’s cloud.

Not only is this a good principle to abide by, it also makes good business sense as it removes a barrier to entry for many businesses.

This principle not only applies to individual users, but also to businesses, schools and other organizations that choose Google Apps to provide better tools at a fraction of the cost of traditional solutions. It should be easy to bring legacy data into the cloud, share data between Google Apps and other IT infrastructure, and get data out of the cloud if it ever makes sense to stop using our service. You can read more about Google Apps data portability on the Data Liberation site.

Google provides programmatic access to your data through a combination of APIs and open standards such as IMAP for GMail, their Email Hosting service. And soon they will be supporting the moving of content to and from Google Sites. So it’s safe to say that if you do choose to switch to Google Apps, you can be sure of always control of your data.
